The CSE Manual - 9th Edition The CSE Manual 9th Edition

Scientific Style and Format for Authors, Editors, and Publishers

Acknowledgments

All 9 editions of the Council of Science Editors (CSE) manual were made possible by volunteer science editors. During the course of more than 60 years, those volunteers documented style and format to enable fellow science editors to apply to publishing a level of discipline, precision, and integrity akin to that which scientists apply to their research.

Just as science evolves, so does scientific publishing. The volunteers who labored over the ninth edition of The CSE Manual: Scientific Style and Format for Authors, Editors, and Publishers revised the manual so that it will remain alive and relevant as an authoritative reference for writing and editing documents in various scientific disciplines.

CSE owes enormous gratitude to the many individuals who contributed to this edition of The CSE Manual, especially the volunteer chapter editors and peer reviewers. In ways both great and small, the contributors named below made a significant difference that should benefit all editors and authors who use The CSE Manual.

Special thanks are owed to the 8 chapter editors from the eighth edition who returned for the ninth: Emmanuel A. Ameh, MBBS, FWACS, FACS; Dana M. Compton; Tina L. Fleischer; Beth E. Hazen, PhD; Raymond Lambert, MLS, ELS; Thomas A. Lang, MA; Beva Nall-Langdon; and Mary Warner, CAE. Also worthy of special praise is Sun Huh, MD, PhD, the only contributor who drafted a new chapter for the ninth edition.

If anyone who helped prepare this manual was omitted from the following list, it was unintentional, and CSE sincerely apologizes for the error.

Unending thanks go to Mary Laur, executive editor at The University of Chicago Press, for her constant support, guidance, and patience throughout this adventure. Much gratitude also goes to Laur’s team of Russell Harper and Mollie McFee. Throughout the development process, Harper lent his expertise from revising The Chicago Manual of Style. In addition, Harper’s peer review of The CSE Manual’s Chapter 29, “References,” enhanced the outstanding work that the chapter’s editors did in revising and simplifying the manual’s rules on in-text and end references. To McFee goes the credit for managing all of the new and reused artwork in the ninth edition.

Among the others at The University of Chicago Press to whom CSE owes a vote of thanks are Jenni Fry, managing editor, Christine Schwab, assistant managing editor, and Jenny Ringblom, associate marketing director for reference works. Fry and Schwab shepherded the manual through copyediting and production, while Ringblom focused on promoting the manual to authors and editors in the science community.

A great debt is owed to Dana M. Compton, who as the CSE Board of Directors’ liaison guided this project through the Board and represented CSE’s interests to The University of Chicago Press. Finally, all those who served on the CSE Board of Directors during the years that the ninth edition was being revised should be lauded for their steadfast support of this style manual.
